Why the High Bay Choice Matters
High bay lighting is the largest single lighting load in most warehouses. Choosing the wrong fixture means either wasted energy or a dark, unsafe aisle. The good news: modern LED high bays pay for themselves quickly when specified correctly.
1. Match Wattage to Mounting Height
As a rule of thumb, use 100W for mounting heights of 4-6 m, 150W for 6-9 m, and 200W+ for 9-12 m. Higher ceilings need more lumens and a narrower beam to push light to the floor.
2. Pick the Beam Angle for Your Aisle
- 60-90° beam: high ceilings and narrow aisles where light must stay on the racking;
- 90-120° beam: open floor layouts and lower ceilings;
- Interchangeable reflectors let one fixture adapt to both.
3. Check Uniformity and Glare
Warehouse workers look up constantly, so glare matters. Choose fixtures with diffused optics or a UGR rating that suits the task. Uniformity (max/min ratio below 5:1) reduces eye strain and shadow hazards.
Rule of thumb: at a 9 m mounting height, 150W fixtures at 90° with 160 lm/W efficiency deliver roughly 200-300 lux in a standard distribution aisle.
4. Verify Certifications and Test Data
For US projects, look for UL & DLC. For EU, CE and RoHS. Always ask for LM-80 and TM-21 reports plus a real IES photometric file - not a generic datasheet.
5. Consider Sensors and Controls
Motion sensors, daylight harvesting and 0-10V dimming can cut warehouse energy use by another 30-50%. Choose fixtures with sensor-ready options to avoid costly retrofits later.
Warranty and After-Sales
A 5-year warranty is standard on quality high bays. Confirm the defect policy, spare-part availability and the manufacturer's aging-test process before ordering.
